Here is exactly what happens to the images and data you put into Altly, in plain language.
Where your images are stored
Uploads go straight from your browser to encrypted Cloudflare R2 object storage, kept in a separate area per workspace. Altly never puts your images on a shared public server, and images are served through short-lived signed links, not a public bucket.
How alt text is generated
To write a description, an image is sent to Anthropic's Claude, the model that generates the alt text and tags. Anthropic does not use data sent through its API to train its models. Altly stores the resulting description and tags alongside the image so your library stays searchable.
Signing in
Altly does not store a separate password. You sign in with your phpDoesntExist account through a standard OAuth2 single sign-on flow, so your credentials stay with the identity provider and never touch Altly directly.
Keeping and deleting your data
You are in control of what stays:
- Delete any image and it is removed from storage.
- Editing a description is free and never leaves the image.
- If you cancel, your files are kept for a short grace period and then removed, so nothing lingers.
Accessibility by default
The whole point of Altly is accessible images. Alt text is written to WCAG 2.2 AA standards, and the app itself is built to the same bar, keyboard navigable, screen-reader friendly, and respectful of reduced-motion settings.
